'00 - '01 Varsity Ice Hockey Game Summaries




DATE: December 2, 2000
OPPONENT: Brick (Home)

The season is under way and the Pirates began with a bang sparked by Ryan Guanzon's slapshot goal from the point; Ryan scores the first goal for The Hall this season. Scott Eberenz scored two beautiful goals and added an assist while E.J. Solimine also chipped in with a goal of his own. The final score: Seton Hall 4, Brick 2.

DATE: December 6, 2000
OPPONENT: Bergen Catholic (Away)

Despite a dynamite first period, the Pirates ended the game tying Bergen Catholic 3-3. Scott Eberenz was on fire as he recorded the hat trick, but it was not enough to get the win.

OPPONENT: Hudson Catholic (Home)

Although tying in the last game, the Pirates really came together to put on a solid, well-rounded performance against Hudson Catholic beating them 4-2. Scott Eberenz continued his hot streak scoring one goal and adding two helpers. Nick Silvestri, Alex Beatrice, and Ryan Collis lit the lamp and lit up the stat book as each of them scored their first goal of the season. Even though the pressure was intense, Geordan Murphy weathered the storm making 26 saves and prevailing in net.

OPPONENT: Portledge School (Away)

Not only is Seton Hall a dominant force in the state of New Jersey, but the school is also a force to be reckoned with outside the state border. The Pirates won convincingly over Portledge School of New York by the final score of 4-0. Geordan Murphy stood on his head making tremendous saves to preserve the shutout. Jason DelPiano scored the first and game winning goal for The Hall while Nick Silvestri scored the second goal and added an assist. The two other goal scorers for the Pirates were Jon Ralph and Alex Beatrice.

OPPONENT: St. Joe's Metuchen (Home)

St. Joe's proved to be no match for the Pirates as Seton Hall triumphed 4-1. Alex Rodriguez got the nod in net for The Hall, and he was impressive only allowing one goal to the opposition. The goal scorers for the Blue and White were Ryan Collis, Jon Manci, Scott Eberenz, and E.J. Solimine.

OPPONENT: LaSalle High School (Away)

Flexing its muscles once more against out-of-state rivals, Seton Hall prevails over LaSalle High School of Pennsylvania 8-3. The goal light worked extra hard during this game as Alex Beatrice lit it up five times and also scored an assist. Ryan Collis added two goals and an assist of his own while Paul Fusco notched his first goal of the season.

OPPONENT: St. Joe's Metuchen (Away)

Kudos go out to the entire Seton Hall Prep team for defeating St. Joe's Metuchen for the second time in three games; this time the final score was 5-1. The Prep had five different goal scorers, they were: Brian Romano, Jason DelPiano, Alex Beatrice, Scott Eberenz, and E.J. Solimine.

OPPONENT: Christian Brothers Academy (Away)

What a day for the Seton Hall defensemen as they rack up goal after goal defeating Christian Brothers Academy by the final score of 6-1. Among the defensive goal scorers were Jon Testa, Jon Ralph, and Brian Romano. Chipping in as well were forwards E.J. Solimine and Ryan Collis who had a goal apiece.

Seton Hall poured on the offense outscoring Bishop Eustace 10-2. Alex Beatrice, Ryan Collis, and Jason DelPiano had two goals apiece; Scott Eberenz, Jon Ralph, and Nick Silvestri netted a goal each in this rout.

OPPONENT: Notre Dame (Home)

The Pirates came out flying scoring four goals right off the bat in this contest. The scoring was led by senior Alex Beatrice as he tallied three goals and one assist. Ryan Collis had two goals and one assist while both Mike Atkinson and E.J. Solimine scored two goals apiece. Also scoring goals for Seton Hall were Paul Fusco and Nick Silvestri. Scott Eberenz had an evening full of helpers as he dished out five assists and led The Hall to an 11-2 victory.

DATE: January 13, 2001
OPPONENT: Princeton Day School (Home)

After playing poorly the first two periods of this contest, the Pirates found themselves down a couple goals. They regrouped and raised the bar in the third period showing their true colors. They didn't earn a win, but they fought hard and came back to tie Princeton Day School 2-2. Paul Fusco got The Hall on the board by deflecting a shot from the point that ultimately found the back of the net. A couple minutes later, Mike Atkinson put in a rebound to tie the game, and that is how it ended. On the defensive side of the ice, Geordan Murphy made save after save to keep The Prep alive.

OPPONENT: Bishop Eustace (Home)

Seton Hall, after trying to make up for their lost against Brick, put away Bishop Eustace handily by the score of 12-4. All of The Hall's goals were scored in the second and third periods. Leading the charge was captain E.J. Solimine who notched a hat trick. Linemates Ryan Collis and Mike Atkinson each had two goals and two assists. Also scoring two goals was alternate captain Scott Eberenz. Alex Beatrice, Paul Fusco, and Stephen Hynes all added a goal apiece; this happened to be Hynes' first goal of the season.

OPPONENT: St. John Vianney (Away)

In a game filled with penalties on both sides, Seton Hall came out on top defeating the Lancers of St. John Vianney by the final score of 6-1. The Pirates were sparked by Mike Atkinson who scored two goals and added an assist. Alex Beatrice added more firepower by netting one goal and dishing out two assists. Ryan Collis and Nick Silvestri each contributed a goal and an assist, while the remaining goal for The Hall was tallied by Scott Eberenz. Between the pipes, Geordan Murphy stopped 19 shots en route to his eighth win of the season.

CBA was not an easy foe for the Pirates, but Seton Hall stood tall and came out victorious in the end 5-3. Brian Romano led all goal scorers netting two of his own while Paul Fusco and Scott Eberenz each chipped in with a goal. At the end, Mike Atkinson flung the puck into the empty net to seal the game.

In this tightly played hockey match, which resembled a poker game, the goaltenders were wild. Both teams came out strong and throughout the game the opposing players tested each other, matching one another's great plays with more spectacular ones. It came down to a powerplay that got the Pirates on the board, and that is how it ended, 1-0. Ryan Collis scored the lone goal for The Hall while Geordan Murphy looked like the stellar Murphy of old times stopping all 27 shots.

Much like the first matchup earlier in the season between these two foes, Seton Hall came out victorious by the final score of 6-1. E.J. Solimine had a sparkling night scoring three goals and one assist. Mike Atkinson totaled two points on one goal and one assist while Scott Eberenz contributed two goals of his own.

OPPONENT: Hudson Catholic (Away)

The Pirates pounced on the Hawks of Hudson Catholic early by taking a 3-0 lead at the end of the first period. Nick Silvestri scored two goals and Ryan Collis added one of his own. The Hawks fought back, but they were squelched by the Blue and White as Scott Eberenz added an empty net goal to seal the 4-2 victory. Brian Liguori made his first start in net for the varsity squad.

OPPONENT: Fairfield Prep (Away)

Again proving themselves worthy out of state, the Pirates jumped all over the Fairfield Prep Jesuits defeating them 5-1. Alex Beatrice led the scoring with two goals and one assist while Jon Ralph tallied one goal and two assists. Ryan Collis pitched in with a goal and an assist while Nick Silvestri scored the other goal for The Hall. Scott Eberenz, season assist leader for Seton Hall, dished out three helpers in this contest.

OPPONENT: Brick (Home - Gordon Cup Semifinals)

Seton Hall continues its winning streak by plowing through Brick by the final score of 7-0. Ryan Collis and Alex Beatrice each netted two goals and added one assist. E.J. Solimine lit the lamp for the Pirates as well as adding an assist of his own. The other goal scorers for the Blue and White were Nick Silvestri and Jon Ralph. Kudos go out to Scott Eberenz who dished out four assists and Mike Atkinson who dished out two. Geordan Murphy stopped all 26 shots and recorded his third shutout of the season.

OPPONENT: Bergen Catholic (Home - Gordon Cup Finals)

Rejoice! Seton Hall has captured its fourth Gordon Cup in the last five years, and they did so in an impressive fashion defeating the Bergen Catholic Crusaders 7-1. Captain E.J. Solimine led the charge netting two goals and adding one assist; Alex Beatrice followed suit with the same stats as E.J. Ryan Collis chipped in with a goal and two assists while Scott Eberenz netted one goal and also had an assist. Mike Atkinson and Nick Silvestri had two assists apiece, and Jason DelPiano scored the final goal for The Hall. Geordan Murphy was solid in net again stopping 31 of 32 shots.

OPPONENT: Don Bosco Prep (Home - State Tournament Parochial Quarterfinals)

The Ironmen of Don Bosco Prep proved to be no big task for the Pirates of Seton Hall Prep; The Hall steamrolled by the final score of 6-1. Mike Atkinson continued his hard work by scoring two goals and adding one assist. The top line of Scott Eberenz, Alex Beatrice, and Ryan Collis all cashed in with one goal and one assist apiece. Senior Captain E.J. Solimine joined the charge by netting one goal and dishing out one assist. Nick Silvestri had a trifecta of assists while Geordan Murphy stopped 15 of 16 shots between the pipes.
